Stavanger, Norway

Today we are in Stavanger, Norway. It is 17 May, Constitution Day in Norway. Our on-board guide tell us "Constitution Day is celebrated with great enthusiasm in Norway by the young and old alike. It marks the day, in 1814, when Norway gained its independence from Denmark". We left the ship shortly after docking, and even though it's only a short walk into town we were immediately presented with people everywhere in traditional dress. The first of many town parades was about to being. Once the parade was underway, we were in the thick of it. This is a huge, happy celebration, far out-doing anything I've ever seen in New Zealand. I'll let the photos speak for themselves.

We then walked around the town, which was all closed today, so only window shopping was possible.

The shops looked interesting and mostly local stores. Also there were plenty of cafes, bars and restaurants open, which would later become full of locals celebrating.

We also walked around the cathedral, and park, generally soaking in the atmosphere. Very peaceful and happy place to be today. And not a hint of protests!

We returned to the shop for lunch, as it was only a short walk, then we went up into the old town, which is cobble stoned streets lined with historic 19th century wooden houses. Much like New Zealand, most houses and buildings here are constructed of wood and painted (usually white).

This was such an amazing day to visit Stavanger, the town so happy, with people everywhere. Although there was another reason it was so busy, there were four cruise ships berthed here today!

Finally, here's a video Helen took.

Tomorrow we visit Kristiansand, Norway.
