Today Helen and I ventured out to the Old Town in Warsaw which required only one bus ride.
Old Town was quiet with not too many people around. We walked up and down some random streets until happening upon the famous Old Town Marketplace. Here we had a good laugh watching beginners on the skating rink, and there was a small arrangements of food vendors.
There are also various restaurants around the square. One caught Helen’s attention and it was late morning so we went inside. We had a very nice attentive waiter who was helpful in his food recommendations. They gave us a free appitizer of bread and spreads, one of which was meaty and tasted a bit like salami but was spreadable with a knife. We also sample some potato and cheese dumplings, a local favourite, and shared a platter of ribs which has a peanut sauce on the were amazing. We finished with apple pie. We made a real meal of it, no pun intended, also trying various beers and finishing with spirits.
It was near 2pm by the time we left. We wandered back to a tram and then caught a ride a long way to a mall where Helen wanted to visit a clothing store.
Only one piece of clothing was bought on this occasion.
By now it was getting dark. It took us about an hour to travel back to our hotel room via tram where we rested for a bit.
We had booked a rental car which we needed tomorrow for driving to Auschwitz. We needed to catch a train to the airport to pick it up at 9pm. The central train terminal is just nearby our hotel and is very modern.
The walk from the terminal to car is about 10 minutes, not covered, and very cold. The car we had was a Toyota hybrid station wagon.
Once in the car we drove to park in the car park in the mall opposite the hotel which has 24 hour access. Luckily the entrance and the park we found are straight cross the road from our room, very quick to go back and forth.
Tomorrow we get up at 3am to drive to Auschwitz.
