Today we had to catch two trains. We were up at 4:45am for a quick pack and out the door, walked to Amsterdam Central station next door, and boarded a train to Berlin leaving 5:59am.
Once at Berlin we had one hour until our next train. The station is very modern, and spread over about 5 levels with escalators all spread apart which forces everyone to walk past shops and eateries.
It was lunch time so Helen grabbed fish and chips while I was went on a mission to find a Curry Wurst, something usually only found in Germany. I found one and grabbed a sausage and chips. It might not have been the best I’ve had but better than nothing! Helen and 8 then met at the platform for the next train to Prague.
The carriage was open plan but the seats were comfortable and spacious. Just before the border some Czech armed police hopped on the train. They stopped just behind us and talked with one passenger for a while. Not sure what was happening, although within earshot I didn’t speak their language. Anyhow at the next stop they escorted the passenger from the train.
Although for most of the trip the scenery was farmlands or commercial stuff, the ride through a valley alongside the Elbe River was a highlight. The river was dotted with cute little houses along both sides. Sadly my seats didn’t make for photos.
We arrived at Prague about 6pm. It was about a 15 minute walk to our hotel, we wheeled our bags along many little cobbled streets, with lots of twists and turns, eventually finding our hotel hidden off the street in a small square surrounded by many bars and restaurants.
We got checked in to our beautiful hotel room for the next three four nights.
We unpacked, had a long awaited pit stop, then ventured out to find some dinner. We just followed our noses and through a few streets, each leading into another little square, then soon enough we happened upon Christmas Markets in the main Old Town square.
It was absolutely beautiful with all the surrounding buildings lit up, Christmas twinkle lights everywhere, carols playing softly in the distance, and lots of food caravans. Lucky for us most food vendors took Euro and I had a pocket full of Euro coins, so dinner came out of loose change.
Happily fed, we retreated to our hotel for sleep. We are still jet lagged, no problem getting to sleep but waking up between 3am and 4am.
We have 3 days in Prague and tomorrow rain is forecast.
