Amsterdam Day Two

Today we ventured out around 9am. Bring Sunday, we didn’t know how many shops would open, or when. It turns out most open at 11am. So we firstly rode Tram #2 pretty much to the end of the line, where the tram conductor threw us off at some random stop pointing to a donut caravan saying we had to try them. They weren’t open but there was a supermarket there where we could grab drinks. Eventually we caught the same tram back into the city.

We stopped to visit the Apple Store and also to buy some local food from Oliebollenkraam, mostly donut type food, not healthy but tasty!

We wanted to go to the Skechers shoe shop but it didn’t open for a while. So we left that for later.

We love visiting markets and unfortunately most in Amsterdam run on Saturday. I found only one market online that opens on the first Sunday of each month. Hey that’s today for us!!! So we went and found the same bus we used yesterday and got off at the same stop for Haarlemmerdijk but this time we needed to walk about 15 minutes through Westerpark where we found the markets.

The markets are huge and we started at the end with arts, crafts, clothing and artisan food like jam and honey. Eventually we found the food caravans and wow what a selection. We tried a few things.

Firstly was Japanese Takoyaki, not something we’ve knowingly had before. They are balls cooked in cast iron moulds, filled with herbs and octopus. They took quite a while to cook but worth the wait, very tasty!

Second we had Swiss cheese on potatoes. Here they melt an entire cheese wheel under a special grill and then scrape off an entire row of these onto potatoes. The cheese was absolutely wonderful.

Third we found an amazing pork BBQ place that did rolls of pulled pork with a strip of cracking on top. Super filling and amazing taste.

By now it was mid afternoon, we were full, and a little tired. We caught the bus back to our hotel where we had a brief pitstop, then headed out again. We caught the same #2 bus just for fun, and after taking the full ride we ended up back at Skechers where Helen purchased two sets of shoes.

By now it was starting to rain, and getting towards bedtime, so we headed back to our hotel. But before bed, we walked over the relatively new underground bike storage. This is incredibly big. We had to go down long people movers where bikes are not allowed to be ridden, only pushed. Underground is a huge expanse and can store 7000 bikes.

This ended our day, and tomorrow we catch a 6am train to Prague via Berlin.
