Nottingham and Michael McIntyre

Today we embarked on an overnight road trip to Nottingham, where we had tickets booked to see the comedian Michael McIntyre live.

The trip involved some shopping destinations along the way, a motorbike gear shop for me (where eventually I didn't make any purchases), and an outlet mall where we purchased many pairs of shoes for Helen, Gwen and I, plus some other clothes and some lunch.

We largely spent the day driving along country roads, with plenty of roundabouts breaking the monotony, until the roundabout themselves became monotonous.

We stayed at the Jury Inn, a hotel in Nottingham very close to the venue. Overnight parking was available at the nearby railway station, and we had about a 10 minute walk to the hotel. The hotel is situated alongside a canal, in very modern precinct with some old brick buildings breaking the newness.

Tired from both the drive and the ongoing jet lag, and knowing we had a long night ahead, we opted for an hour's snooze. I set the alarm and when it went off, I fell asleep again. I woke again in time for us to get moving, it was a short walk to the venue (Nottingham Motorpoint Arena) where we picked up tickets.

We had plenty of time, so walked in toward the inner city and found some "cheap and cheerful" Asian cuisine. By the time we finished that, and returned to the arena and found our seats, it was only 10 minutes till showtime.

The arena holds 10,000 and was pretty much sold out. The support act was comedian Andrew Bird, first time we've heard of him, he was very funny and I will definitely keep an eye out for his material in future. He did roughly 20 minutes of standup before leaving the stage, then we had a small break before Michael McIntyre hit the stage for 90 minutes of side-splitting laughter. He's hilarious and we had a great night.

Interesting before the show, it was announced to please switch all phones off and put them away. Amazingly everyone did, throughout the entire show not one person held up a mobile phone. Everyone was just living in the moment. I waited until final claps to take a sneaky photo of Michael McIntyre on stage, I'm such a rebel.

After the gig, we headed back to the hotel. The walk was cool (5 degrees) but at least it was a pleasant evening, no rain or wind. We retired to bed just after 11pm.
