Verona

We sailed into Venice on sunrise, making for some amazing early morning sights as the sun broke through the clouds. From first entry past land, to being tied up at the port, took roughly 1.5 hours. I had set the alarm clock (aka iPhone) so as not to miss a minute and wasn't disappointed. Having a port side cabin, we didn't see Venice as such on the way in, but had the best light for photos and views of the outer reaches having the sun behind us.

Once in port, we were in a rush to finish breakfast and meet our excursion party for a day trip to Verona.

Our trip started with a long bus ride, we sat down the back of the bus and chatted with one of the ship's musicians who had joined our party. As a staff member he had a sheet where he had to take notes of how the tour went. Most amusing as he kept nodding off to sleep and would wake up and ask us for what he needed to know to fill in his form! Understandable given the musicians are up late every night entertaining.

Once in Verona we were given firstly a driving tour, then went on foot through into the old city.

Our guide was knowledgeable but had a headset and speaker that didn't work properly so we didn't get much information. Instead we just feasted our eyes on this beautiful city while I took photos galore. The main square was alive with shops and restaurants and filled with people.

The main drawcard in Verona is that is the (supposed) real life home of Romeo and Juliet so we were taken to Romeo's house (which is now a private residence) and later to Juliet's house with the balcony inside a courtyard. This courtyard was absolutely packed with people, which I've tried hard not to convey in my photos.

There is a bronze statue of Juliet and apparently it is good luck to touch her right breast. It was hilarious watching as many people as possible pose for their photo, and while I didn't bother here's a photo of a random stranger having a grope, he probably doesn't even realise his picture is now on the internet for all to see!

Finally we were taken to see the Arena which is in remarkably good condition but sadly we only were able to see the outside.

Overall Verona is beautiful but our tour was badly organised and rather then getting a taste, we were given a teaser, and Helen is keen to return and explore at our leisure on future travels.
