Travelling to Barcelona

Today we arose at 4:30am to quickly depart the hotel and get to the airport for an early flight to Barcelona. We had booked business class for this 2 hour flight, which gave us many privileges including extra baggage (required!), priority check in (very nice!), priority security scanning (a pleasure!) lounge access (free breakfast and internet!), and sitting in first row on the plane (for a quick escape!) and priority baggage (for a quicker escape!). Overall, super easy and I can see why people with money do this all the time.

We flew across the Pyrenees mountain range with a great view on a sunny day.

Barcalona Airport is easy to navigate however we had to walk over a long way to catch a train into the city. We bought a 3 day travel pass and then jumped on the next train.

Our destination station is underground so once we surfaced, we found ourselves on a busy street. It was lunch time, we needed food and toilet, and there was a McDonalds right there. So guess what we ate for lunch? They had some nice burger offerings with more of a Spanish feel, and spicy fries which I liked and bacon fries which Helen preferred.

After that we had to wheel 3 suitcases for nearly 1km to the hotel over uneven footpaths. Once at our hotel we checked in, and found the room to be small but nice, and very good WiFi coverage. It's about now I should apologise because we had perfect internet, but were too busy enjoying ourselves in Barcalona, that this and other blog postings are about a week overdue in being posted.

We had purchased a "Barcelona Pass" and had to go collect our travel pass cards at a TurĂstic shop on La Rambla, a busy and famous shopping and tourist hotspot. We got our passes, and used the free WiFi there to find our bearings.

Nearby was the famous Mercado de La Boqueria, famous food markets. A dazzling array of all types of meat, fish, fruit, cheese, drinks and tapas. All the colours of the rainbow just waiting to be bought and eaten.

We wandered around, and wanted to try everything, but had no cash! We found one vendor who accepted credit card but honestly the food choice we made wasn't the best, well in reality our first taste of local Spanish food and the taste buds had not adjusted yet.

After some walking around La Rambla, through thick crowds, we returned to our hotel via metro for an early night. We had the odd quick sit down rest along the way on really nice combined ornamental street lights and seats.

Helen stayed at the hotel, while I wandered around the neighbourhood where I found a supermarket. Well, the first supermarket I entered a lady was yelling at me and would not yet me in, and it turned out no backpacks allowed. I had to put my backpack in a locker and pay 1€ for the privilege. I walked out and found another supermarket where my backpack was welcome, and I was able to buy us some drinks to have in the hotel room.

Helen had a head cold coming on, so we went to bed early ready for our first big day tomorrow.
