Today we awoke to pouring rain, and poor visibility. We had to drive up to Portland, and catch a ferry in the evening that would take us to Nova Scotia. Unfortunately the rain was persistent, and we had a wet drive.
Once arriving in Portland, we made a detour to see Portland Head Light. The mist / fog was too thick, we could hardly see the light house. Although the fog horn was sounding persistently and we did hear that OK! Thanks to the magic of Photoshop here's the lighthouse after all.
After that we headed up to Freeport, a small town around 30 minutes north of Portland. There are many outlet shops here, and also the LL Bean flagship store which was most impressive with a large array of guns and crossbows, and hunting gear, all on display to have a play with. They even had an indoor crossbow shooting range to try the products out. We spent quite a while here, before driving back to Portland.
The ship was due to leave at 8pm and we wanted to be there nice and early. Unknown to us, the ship was about 2 hours late. So we had a long wait. I walked around the Portland docks area, lots of nice restaurants and bars, interesting area.
Eventually we did get on the ship where we had our own cabin. The ship, operated by Nova Star Cruises, was doing its last sailing of the season, then it's unknown if the service will return again next year. The ship is impressive with many bars, restaurants, cabins, all very tidy, and yet there were only around 60 passengers on board. A very strange feeling and sad that such a great service does not get better usage. For us, the overnight sailing saved us 1.5 days driving and we got to sleep overnight.
The arrival was also 2 hours later than we had been advised. The captain told us they expected to make up time overnight but this didn't happen. So we arose at 5:30am to get our breakfast, and then sat around for ages before berthing, could have got more sleep in!
Once we disembarked, we had to clear Canadian Immigration sitting in our car, before eventually being let loose onto Nova Scotia. Thankfully by now the weather was clear for our day ahead.
