Driving from Washington DC to Philadelphia

Today we left Washington DC, and headed to Philadelphia. This was meant to be a three hour drive heading east across Maryland and Delaware to finally cross back into Pennsylvania for our final destination. The driving is confusing and manic as we leave our hotel in Arlington, passing the Pentagon, some roads have changed that our GPS does not know about. A few wrong turns and eventually we're on the main routes. All under control.

The route is mostly in built up areas, with various clothing shops and outlet malls along the way. This makes it slow going for us as we keep wanting to stop, and along the way we "collect" hundreds of dollars of gear especially at a fantastic Columbia store that had a great selection.

As we approached Philadelphia, the roads straightened out and became more rural. This part of the drive was tedious and slow, the speed limit only equating to 96km/h even though it is a divided highway with 2 wide lanes in each direction!

As we approach civilization at Philadelphia, things got pretty rough, very much on the wrong side of the tracks. We kept all the car doors locked just in case.

Here is one of Helen's time lapse videos of the trip from Annapolis, MD to Philadelphia, PA

Our hotel is near the airport in what initially seemed a strange spot, the hotel being surrounded by a moat. The indoor decor is very odd, with giant chairs that make guests look tiny, and strange psychedelic colour schemes mixed with some art deco. However the rooms are very nice and spacious. It turns out the moat is attached to a larger lake, and is home to many native species including birds, rats and fish.

Once we chilled out and eventually got hungry, I start looking for dinner options on the internet. Not wanting to venture into downtown Philly this evening, nor backtrack the way we came in (because we want to stay alive), we opt for a nearby Dennys which pretty much met expectations and we came away unable to move we were so full.

Tomorrow we will head into Philly for the day. Watch this space!
